Kerry Thornley was still awaiting trial on his perjury charges. He sent an update to Sylvia Meagher, and noted that the Berkeley Barb had run an article about how Garrison's preoccupation with the JFK assassination had led to a miscarriage of justice:

Garrison's lack of attention to the D. A.'s office was noticed, and the New Orleans States-Item called him the Phantom DA. In addition, Assistant District Attorney William Alford resigned in 1971 because he felt Garrison wasn't doing his job.
