Oliver Stone's so-called documentary series, JFK: Destiny Betrayed, makes it appear that Israel was about to use nuclear weapons in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (41:19 in episode 4)
Donald Sutherland: In 1973, while Egyptian tanks were crossing the Sinai during the Yom Kippur War, Commander Moshe Dayan proposed the use of nuclear weapons.
This is only part of the story and JFK: Destiny Betrayed leaves out the most important details.
Israel was facing an extremely dire situation in the Golan Heights with Syrian tanks advancing. Israel was caught off guard and it did not appear that they could stop the Syrians. The situation was perilous.
Only in the early morning of Oct. 6 did the Israeli leadership finally understand that it was facing a full-scale attack by Egypt and Syria that very evening. (And even then they had the estimated time of the attack wrong; the war actually started at 2 p.m.) By the next morning, the Egyptian Army had crossed the Suez Canal and columns of Syrian tanks had penetrated deep into the Golan Heights. Hundreds of Israeli soldiers had died in a heroic but hopeless effort to save small, isolated strongholds along Israel's borders.
It's not surprising that Dayan brought up the nuclear option, but Golda Meir, the Prime Minister of Israel, told him to "forget it."
For some reason that was left out of JFK: Destiny Betrayed.
In Arnon Azaryahu’s account {he was a senior aide to Minister Yisrael Galili], the war-time security cabinet, consisting of Galili, prime minister Meir, defense minister Dayan and deputy prime minister Yigal Allon, held an especially lengthy meeting on October 7, 1973.
Dayan did not advise using nuclear weapons - he advised to start the preparations in case they are needed:
In the interview, Azaryahu goes on to say: “So Moshe Dayan is suggesting saving a few hours of preparation, in other words, that the time factor could be really critical.
JFK: Destiny Betrayed is irresponsible in not mentioning the dire situation facing the Israelis, and in not mentioning the answer Golda Meir gave to Moshe Dayan.
