In Search of the Oswald Operation, Part Five

Writer: Fred LitwinFred Litwin

Here is an excerpt from a transcript: (49:55)

Jefferson Morley: Another document that we requested, a roster of paramilitary assets. We did get that list, and we're analyzing it. What's important to understand here is that when Lee Harvey Oswald was in New Orleans in the summer of 1963, he was in contact, and in view of, dealing with multiple people with CIA contacts and CIA code names even, and in fact, one of the documents that emerged this week, and a JFK researcher sent me, was the personnel file of a man named Agustin Guitart, and this is one of the documents that also gives me new confidence in talking about the responsibility of the CIA in the assassination.

Agustin Guitart was a professor at a University in New Orleans. A file, as it was in its redacted form, showed that in 1963, he was conveying information from his brother who lived in Cuba. But a lot of the file was classified, and was redacted, we couldn't see it. When some of those redactions came off, we learned that Agustin Guitart had another role for the CIA, and that was spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans. Not only that, we know that Agustin Guitart was in the courtroom when Oswald was arrested for disturbing the peace with other Cubans. So a CIA asset charged or responsible, deployed, recruited for spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans was in the courtroom with a man named Lee Harvey Oswald three months before the assassination. So again we see Oswald under CIA eyes. That's what these new records tell us. Oswald is under CIA eyes constantly from November 1959 to November 1963.

The CIA did have an interested in Dr. Guitart, but I don't see any indication that he was spying was "charged or responsible, deployed, recruited for spying on pro-Castro forces in New Orleans."

Here is a memo for the CIA's contact division which indicates their interest:

Here is a report of an interview with Guitart:

The CIA wanted Dr. Guitart to recruit his uncle to get some information.

Here is a letter from Guitart's case officer:

The name Oswald does not appear in Guitart's 201 file.

Hardly a basis for "Oswald is under CIA eyes constantly from November 1959 to November 1963" much less "new confidence in talking about the responsibility of the CIA for the assassination."

Once again, Morley over-reaches and makes unwarranted conclusions.

Here is Guitart's statement to the Garrison investigation:

Garrison had a pretty big interest in Guitart. In 1967, Guitart moved to Louisiana Avenue Parkway, which was the same street where David Ferrie lived. As you may know, propinquity played a big role inn Garrison's investigative skills.
